Calling for Home Movie Donations

Your Home Movies in the Chinese American Museum Moving Picture Archive

The Chinese American Museum (CAM) collects home movies and videos that depict the experiences of Chinese Americans living in Southern California from 1850 to 2000. Because CAM is interested in the recent experiences of Chinese Americans, it is likely that you have the perfect home video for CAM's Moving Picture Archive. While CAM is seeking footage taken between 1900-2000, CAM is especially interested in home movies taken between 1965-2000. Below is a list of general themes and specific types of videos CAM collects.

Your home movies/video may become part of CAM's permanent exhibits. Located at El Pueblo Historical Monument, commonly known as Olvera Street, CAM's new facility in this historic district will bring the story of Chinese Americans to El Pueblo's 1.5 million annual visitors. To have your home movies or videos considered for CAM's permanent exhibits, please send us a VHS copy of your video (if you have a copy) or simply send us a description of your video to:

  • Family occasions: birthday parties, anniversaries, weddings
  • Recreation activities: children playing games, Mahjong sessions
  • Children/Young People: school play /Halloween/ school sports
  • Funeral ceremonies, processions, burial

  • Day leaving for America; saying good-bye to family & friends; arriving at the airport; packing or unpacking luggage

Theme: Exploring Culture & Identity
Not limited to the following examples:

  • American born visiting China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia, etc. for the first time
  • Chinese Folk Dance Performances

Theme: Business, Careers, & Manufacturing
Not limited to the following examples:

  • Industry award ceremonies
  • Soy sauce manufacturing
  • Tofu making/processing
  • Working in the family business
  • Garment manufacturing
  • Cigar manufacturing
  • Acupuncture
  • Herb shops
  • Chinese restaurant

Theme: Multicultural Southern California
Not limited to the following examples:

  • Groups of adults, students, or children of different ethnicities at work or recreation
  • Wedding ceremonies/receptions including or mixing Chinese traditions and traditions from other cultures
  • Interracial married couples with their nuclear and extended families
  • Funeral ceremonies/burial stones including or mixing Chinese traditions and traditions from other cultures
  • Any holiday meals showing a mixture of Chinese traditions and traditions from other cultures
  • Children and their favorite toys

Theme: Chinese American Organizations
(political, social, support, student & religious)
Not limited to the following examples:

  • Group photo or photo of officers
  • WWII activities
  • Political/labor protests
  • Activities and special events
