Your Recent Photographs in the Chinese American Museum
Photo Archive
The Chinese American Museum (CAM) collects photographs
that depict the experiences of Chinese Americans
living in Southern California from 1850 to 2000.
Because CAM is interested in the recent experiences of Chinese
Americans, it is likely that you have the perfect
photographs for CAM's Photo Archive. While CAM is
seeking photographs taken between 1850-2000, CAM is
especially interested in photographs/snapshots taken
between 1965-2000. Below is a list of general themes
and specific images CAM collects.
Your photographs/snapshots may become part of CAM's
permanent exhibits. Located at El Pueblo
Historical Monument, commonly known as Olvera Street,
CAM's new facility in this historic district will
bring the story of Chinese Americans to El Pueblo's
1.5 million annual visitors. To have your photographs
considered for CAM's permanent exhibits, simply send
us a black & white photocopy of your photos with your
name, address, telephone, and e-mail address to:

We are looking for:
Theme: Family Pictures & Snapshots
Not limited to the following examples:
- Informal family portraits, snapshots or gatherings,
especially at home or "everyday" setting
- Snapshots of family gatherings: birthday parties,
anniversaries, weddings
- Recreation activities: children playing games,
Mahjong sessions
- Children/Young People: dressed for school plays,
Halloween, school sports, etc.
Theme: Immigration
Not limited to the following example:
- Day leaving for America; saying good-bye to family &
friends; arriving at the airport; packing or unpacking
luggage
Theme: Exploring Culture & Identity
Not limited to the following examples:
- American born visiting China, Taiwan, Hong Kong,
Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia, etc. for the first time
- Chinese Folk Dance Performances
Theme: Business, Careers, & Manufacturing
Not limited to the following examples:
- Industry award ceremonies
- Soy sauce manufacturing
- Tofu making/processing
- Snapshots/portraits outside or inside family business
- Garment manufacturing
- Cigar manufacturing
Theme: Multicultural Southern California
Not limited to the following examples:
- Groups of adults, students, or children of different
ethnicities
- Wedding ceremonies/receptions including or mixing
Chinese traditions and traditions from other cultures
- Interracial married couples with their nuclear and
extended families
- Funeral ceremonies/burial stones including or mixing
Chinese traditions and traditions from other cultures
- Any holiday meals showing a mixture of Chinese
traditions and traditions from other cultures
- Children and their favorite toys
Theme: Chinese American Organizations
(political, social, support, student & religious)
Not limited to the following examples:
- Group photo or photo of officers
- Activities and special events
