Join us for the opening of CAM’s new special exhibition, Breaking Ground: Chinese American Architects in Los Angeles (1945-1980). Breaking Ground is part of Pacific Standard Time. This unprecedented collaboration, initiated by the Getty Foundation, brings together more than sixty cultural institutions from across Southern California for six months beginning October 2011 to tell the story of the birth of the L.A. art scene. **. The exhibit will showcase the architectural achievements of four pioneering Chinese American architects whose contributions were critical to the development of Los Angeles’ urban and visual landscape between 1945 and 1980. The evening will feature guest speakers, refreshments, and the debut of a new companion catalog for the exhibit.

Build Your Dream Home Workshop

CAM at El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument

In conjunction with the Breaking Ground exhibit, critically-acclaimed urban planner and co-founder of the Latino Urban Forum, James Rojas will lead family-friendly interactive art workshops to instruct participants on how to design a modern home using unconventional materials such as yarn, poker chips and even hair rollers! Kids and adults will learn about the architectural design process and will build a model of their ideal modern home while integrating memories, visions, and ideas from their minds into physical forms.

No RSVP required. Drop by any time between 10am-2pm. Workshops will take approximately 45 minutes to an hour to complete.

MUSEUMS FREE-FOR-ALL
Free Admission Days January 28th and 29th, 2012

In a joint effort to present the arts and culture to the diverse and myriad communities in Southern California, the Museum Marketing Roundtable announces the seventh annual ‘Museums Free-For-All’ Saturday-Sunday, January 28th and 29th, 2012. The museums—presenting art, cultural heritage, natural history, and science—will open their doors wide and invite visitors free of charge (some exceptions apply).

From residential to commercial architecture, the four Chinese American architects featured in Breaking Ground leave behind a legacy of iconic buildings and landmarks certain to inspire many more admirers for generations to come. But beyond their memorable work, what inspired the person behind the ideas and designs. Join panelists Floridia Cheung (Co-curator), Sue Fawn Chung, Ph.D. (Professor, Historian), John English (Architectural Historian), and Barton Choy, AIA (Architect) in a revealing discussion about the lives and history of these architects, and the social, political and racial barriers they crossed to break new grounds in L.A.’s urban landscape.

Featured architect, Gin D. Wong, FAIA (Architect), will be making a special appearance to examine how the architectural movement has shaped Los Angeles into the vibrant metropolis it is today.

Become a Museum Docent! Help guide and engage visitors of all ages through the museum’s history and exhibitions. Volunteer docents will participate in an in-depth 6-week training program that will include interesting reading materials, guest lecturers, and guided museum tours. Training is every Monday for 6 weeks starting June 25, 2012 and will take place at the museum.

(de)Constructing Chinatown will bring together local artists to create new art that breaks down commonly-held notions about Los Angeles’ Chinatown, while re-envisioning new perspectives that reflect a more genuine understanding and appreciation of the community’s history, culture and role as an essential part of the city’s changing landscape.

Prominently recognized as one of the premiere Chinese American events in Southern California, the Banquet honors the achievements of extraordinary individuals who have made a significant impact or lasting contributions towards the advancement of the Chinese American community and beyond in the fields of art, literature, journalism, medicine, film, science, business, government, law, athletics, and their community. In addition, the Banquet also serves as the major annual fundraiser for CAM, helping to raise critical funds to cover operational and program costs.
