Beyond the 15 Minutes: Documentary Screenings and a Panel Discussion on the Lasting Legacy of Film

Screenings of documentary shorts, complemented with a moderated panel of emerging and established Chinese American filmmakers, will highlight this program’s mission to encourage and inspire the next generation of Chinese American filmmakers.

FELICIA LOWE

Felicia Lowe is a longtime documentary producer whose award winning works have been broadcast on television and used in classrooms across the country.  Her documentaries have focused on the Chinese experience in America and reveal immigrant experiences that are both unique and universal among many seeking new lives in a new land.  A child of immigrants from China, she is most proud of her film, ”Carved in Silence” which shines a light on the Immigration Station at Angel Island, the so called “Ellis Island of the West.” Lowe received an EMMY for Best Cultural Documentary for “Chinatown: The Hidden Cities of San Francisco” and produced “China: Land of My Father,” a personal journey to meet her paternal grandmother in 1979.  Lowe is in post production on "Chinese Couplet" and beginning work on "Barefoot Historian." Lowe has been actively involved in the preservation efforts of the Angel Island Immigration Station.

LONG STORY SHORT is documentary that tells the fascinating story of a popular Asian American husband-and-wife performance duo of the ‘40s and ‘50s and their rise from the nightclubs of Chinatown to the Ed Sullivan Show, amid the challenges of industry racism and discrimination.

Lou Nakasako goes behind the scene of Justin Lin's FINISHING THE GAME and interviews the cast and crew about their views of Asian Americans in Hollywood.

 

EVAN LEONG Him Mark Lai: The People’s Historian

Evan Leong captures the personal journey of Him Mark Lai, an accomplished Asian American historian.

 

JEFFREY CHIN Angel Island Profiles

Angel Island Profiles describes the lives of several detainees of Angel Island Immigration Station as they wait for an update of their immigration status.

Lantern Festival 2010

Everyone’s favorite community tradition is celebrating its ninth year at El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument! Lantern Festival 2010 will spotlight the sights and sounds of this popular Chinese holiday with a recreation of a traditional village street fair featuring brilliant lantern displays, exciting stage performances, a variety of interactive workshops showcasing Chinese traditional and culturally-diverse arts and crafts, and a not-to-be-missed book talk featuring some pretty amazing authors! Save the date now -- participation at the festival will be free of charge as always!

Lantern Festival 2010 – CAM’s signature annual community event – welcomes notable authors, Bonnie Tsui (American Chinatown: A People’s History of Five Neighborhoods) and Paula Yoo (Shining Star: The Anna May Wong Story) to discuss and autograph their latest literary projects. Presented in conjunction with the Hollywood Chinese: The Arthur Dong Collection exhibit, these book talks will contribute to the rich dialogue of Chinese and Chinese American presence in Hollywood.
