Chinatown Residents Crossing the Street in 1903-04

[Chinatown Residents Crossing the Street in 1903-04]

Chinatown residents crossing North Los Angeles Street in front of the Garnier Building, 1903-04. New pipe is being installed under the unpaved street. Ornamental balconies and the corrugated metal awning are in place. Chinese paper lanterns hang from the metal awning. Note that each bay contains one shop window in the southern one-third and two pairs of double doors in the center and northern one-third of the bay. With this rhythm of openings, the eight bays of the Garnier probably contained sixteen pairs of doors plus the central entry hall facing Alameda Street. The window sashes are quite dark and are probably with the original dark red paint. There are roller shades in the upper story windows and modesty curtains on glass doors. Looking west.
