Interior of Sun Wing Wo Store, 1902

[Interior of Sun Wong Wo Store]

Earliest known photo of the Garnier Building interior, in the Sun Wing Wo Store, 1902. Lew Sing Low, a partner of the company (third from right), and others are dressed for a Chinese New Year festival. A wooden balustrade is visible behind drapery at mezzanine level. This view is of the most northern bay, which is planned for restoration as the Chinese Museum. Objects of interest in the room are (left to right): wooden sales counter; iron-string ball, crocus blooming in dish on a stand; a temple arrangement, center, with flowering bulbs; incense burner; and a scroll. From the ceiling hangs a two-arm gas chandelier, an electric light with shade, and paper lanterns. At right, shelves with earthen ware bottles and other imported goods. Also, two chairs -- American Bentwood on the right and Chinese-carved on the left.
