Editor's Note

What is a Bulletin? Shorter than a newsletter and longer than a letter. We want MCAH supporters to stay up-to-date.

President's Message

by Dr. Dan Louie, Jr.

Dear Members and Friends,

This is a short Bulletin to bring you up to date on current developments:

  1. Our architect, Scott Field, is at this moment finalizing our plans for our part of the Garnier Building with the Building & Safety Dept. so that we can proceed with a contract to restore the space for MCAH.

  2. We have also been active in many other efforts, in our Families Exhibit, Getty Internships, Old Chinatown oral histories, the 3-D Model, L.A.'s 214th birthday party, and the Tyrus Wong-Gilbert Leong documentary for which we have received approximately $5,900 in memory of our beloved late director Gilbert Leong.

  3. The RFP (Request for Proposals) for a developer for the Pico-Garnier block is presently before the City Council's Arts, Health, and Humanities Committee. When this is approved, El Pueblo Monument can proceed with seismic work on our Garnier building.

Please read on to avail yourself on what is happening. Thanks,

Dan.

Viewing Gold Mountain Families

by Elmo Gambarana

To encourage younger Chinese Americans to preserve their individual family histories, the Friends developed a five panel traveling exhibit, Gold Mountain Families, last May documenting several generations of four Los Angeles families. Reaching into past family recollections, papers, and photos, Judge Ronald Lew, Castelar School Principal Dore Wong, student Kimberly Fong, and college-graduate Jenny Lin each offered a revealing roundup of family vignettes and documents, forming family trees tracing their roots. The choice of families was made by S. Cheng and the Exhibit Committee to place different types of families side-by-side: 2 long timers and 2 immigrant families, one Cantonese, one Mandarin.

The bottom line, an instructive how to separate panel, outlined the various private and public sources available to the junior historian, along with several means of recording individual bits of information to create an unbroken narrative.

The portable, free standing exhibit began an extensive road tour of one-month stands at the Chinatown Library, both the City Hall and Library in Monterey Park, and the Alhambra and South Pasadena libraries. At each location, people were excited about its message of assembling and documenting individual family sagas before the memories and members are gone. A reception was held at the City Hall display as part of a 75th Anniversary program with the Monterey Park Historical Society. The Monterey Park City Council gave accolades with the Hon. Judy Chu officiating.

The exhibit team was led by El Pueblo curator Suellen Cheng and chair Elmo Gambarana, committee members Jim Fong, Jenny Lin, Bob Kwan, Munson Kwok, interns Michelle Chung and Teresa Ngo, and high school volunteers Aaron Chung & Alan Zhou. Also, F-MCAH wishes to thank Winifred Lew, Ruby Ling Louie, Paul Louie, Sam Sik Low, and Jean Bruce Poole who lent items from the MCAH collection, and for the use of their special family artifacts and photos. Paul Louie provided genealogy information.

Fundraiser!!

In light of recent developments which look like accelerating progress, your Board of Directors believe it is time to start planning a fundraiser or two to construct and develop our museum site. (Hopefully we can target May or June for the first one.) We will be needing all kinds of help on this project. As an MCAH supporter, if you will volunteer and/or know of anyone who would be willing to help us, please contact us immediately. We need help, help, help. Please contact either Dan Louie or Suellen Cheng.

People to help with mailing lists, receptions, entertainment, and contacts with individuals, families, professional groups, foundations, corporations, possible sponsors and donors.

Getty Intern Program

by Elmo Gambarana

Spring 1997 will mark the fifth successive season that the Friends will be seeking financial support from the Getty Multicultural Summer Internship Program. The past four years we have had the services of two Chinese American collge students-in-training for ten summer weeks to assist them in creating and implementing historic ongoing programs.

In 1996 Michelle Chung (Universtiy of California, Irvine) and Teresa Ngo (Cal. State Univ. Northridge) worked on several programs from July to October. They completed over 320 pages of oral histories and their transcriptions, collected 65 historical photos of L.A. Old Chinatown, assisted in installation of exhibits, planned and conducted a community workshop Memories of Old Chinatown and researched old photos and maps for the Old Chinatown scale model.

Past interns have accomplished similar tasks in recreating Old Chinatown, researching Friends' exhibits, and digging up photos and artifacts. The interns themselves have sent back rave reports to the Getty staff, citing renewed personal interest in Chinese American history and culture. The fact that Getty continues to fund our program is evidence of the fulfillment of its mandate by the Friends with El Pueblo. The community can be proud of the Friends-El Pueblo partnership in preserving and exhibiting its findings for future generations to enjoy.

In 1996, MCAH did 20 oral histories, collected about 100 new historic photos, acquired 200 letters, and several rare artifacts.

Memories of Old Chinatown

This new project embraces two elements for future Museum displays. Imagine someday a full 3-D scale model of Old Chinatown!! This is a fun effort being hatched by Gerald Jann and his clever crew of modelers. He needs more specific info. store-to-store, house-to-house, especially owners and architecture. Please contact us.

The 2nd leg of the effort is group oral histories of how it was. First held July 13, 1996 and fully videotaped, a number of interactive dialogues took place as our famous Old Chinatown map was marked up. More sessions will follow this year.
