PHOTO DAY
Event To Build Community Relations And Museum Database
LOS ANGELES (June 9, 2003)
-- Individuals eager to utilize their historical knowledge
or to showcase their photographic treasures now have an avenue
to do so at Photo Day, a free public event presented by the
Chinese American Museum (CAM) in Los Angeles. To be held first
on Saturday, July 19, 2003 at the Chinatown Public Library
and returning on Saturday, August 2, 2003 at the Chinese Cultural
Center in El Monte, the event offers the public a unique and
active role in helping the Museum expand its Photo Collection
database. The current Collection, which contains over several
thousand photographs and images, is a vital component of the
Museum’s exhibition plans scheduled to be unveiled at
the end of this year.
Highly interactive and educational,
Photo Day aims to encourage an open dialogue between the Museum
and the greater public by gathering and sharing stories of
local Chinese American communities in Southern California
through the use of old and present-day photographs. Visitors
can participate in the event through one or both of the following
ways:
Photo Identification
Various copies of the Museum’s Photo Collection will
be displayed for public viewing. Help is needed in identifying
the people, place, date, or occasion of each photograph so
that they may be correctly labeled for exhibition.
Photo Donations
The Museum will be collecting photograph donations focusing
on Southern California’s Chinese American communities
from the 1850’s to the present, fitting the themes of
immigration, community history, early enterprise,
and Chinese American family photos. The donations
can be originals or reprints and photo credits will be provided
if used for exhibitions. *Please note: Donations are not
guaranteed to be used in exhibits.
